What do people use old Cingular Smartchips for?

I have seen auctions on eBay for those used Cingular Smartchips from old cell phones and I'm wondering why on earth someone would buy them? I'm talking about the little orange and white sim cards that go in the back of the phone. What can they be used for after someone has cancelled their cell service?

Typically the auctions will be for sim cards (old or new) that have NOT been used yet.
