If the iphone is unlocked will apple create a firmware update to combat this?

I want an unlocked iphone, but I'm worried that if I get one apple will create an update so that I can't use the phone anymore. Could this happen and has it happened? Thanks for answering.
I have found out that sim-unlocked phones could be bricked from apple updates. But I was wondering if you have to update your iphone. Is there anything apple can do to make you update your phone?

There's no way to make firmware tamper-proof in the way that you suggest. If there was, phone companies would already be doing it. What will mess up your phone is the periodic updates because the update will detect the altered firmware files that makes your phone usable on another network and it will disable the phone until you do a restore. The phone won't be permanently bricked but it won't work until the restore is done. If that happens then you are back at square one and you will have to unlock your phone again.

If your phone is working well and you're satisfied with it then there really is no reason to do an update and Apple can't force you to do one. When I connect my iPhone to iTunes, an option will appear to update my phone but I always decline to do so. My iPhone which I use on T-Mobile still has 1.1.4 firmware because I found that there isn't anything in the 2.1 update that I really need. When or if, I ever decide to update my iPhone, I'll make sure that there's a reliable unlock hack available before I do it.
